ABSTRAKT

Qëllimi: Ky studim synon të vlerësojë zbatimin e metodologjive të edukimit parashkollor dhe nivelin e gatishmërisë për shkollë të fëmijëve në klasat përgatitore, duke analizuar në mënyrë krahasuese dallimet ndërmjet institucioneve që zbatojnë qasje të ndryshme pedagogjike, me fokus në qasjen Reggio Emilia.

Metodologjia: Studimi përdori dizajn kuazi-eksperimental me matje në fillim dhe në fund të vitit akademik, i integruar brenda një qasjeje me metoda të përziera. Të dhënat sasiore u përdorën për të analizuar ndryshimet në kohë dhe dallimet ndërmjet grupeve, ndërsa të dhënat cilësore ofruan një kuptim më të thelluar rreth variablave të studimit. Kampioni përfshiu 535 fëmijë nga 18 klasa përgatitore në institucione publike parashkollore në Tiranë, së bashku me prindërit e tyre (N = 535) dhe 36 mësuese. Nëntë prej klasave ishin të orientuara sipas qasjes Reggio Emilia. Të dhënat u mblodhën përmes instrumenteve si pyetësorët dhe intervistat, për vlerësimin e zhvillimit të fëmijëve, cilësinë e mjediseve të të nxënit, praktikat pedagogjike dhe përfshirjen e prindërve.

Rezultatet: Gjetjet treguan progres të dukshëm të fëmijëve në të gjitha fushat e zhvillimit, nga fillimi në fund të vitit përgatitor në kopsht, me efekte më të theksuara në zhvillimin gjuhësor dhe njohës. Analizat krahasuese mes fëmijëve të klasave Reggio dhe të klasave të tjera evidentuan se dallimet ndërmjet grupeve rezultuan të rëndësishme në fushën e zhvillimit socio-emocional dhe në përqasjen ndaj të nxënit. Cilësia e mjediseve të të nxënit, praktikat pedagogjike bashkëkohore dhe përfshirja e prindërve rezultuan në nivele të kënaqshme dhe të krahasueshme ndërmjet grupeve, por me avantazhe për klasat Reggio në disa tregues specifikë. Faktorët demografikë, pedagogjikë dhe institucionalë shpjeguan një pjesë të konsiderueshme të variancës në gatishmërinë për shkollë, ku rolin më të fortë parashikues e kishin praktikat pedagogjike.

Konkluzione: Rezultatet sugjerojnë se qasja Reggio Emilia kontribuon më tepër në fusha specifike të zhvillimit. Gjetjet theksojnë rëndësinë e praktikave pedagogjike bashkëkohore, cilësinë e mjediseve të të nxënit dhe përfshirjen prindërore në edukim në përgatitjen e fëmijëve për tranzicionin drejt arsimit fillor. Studimi thekson rolin e ndërveprimit ndërmjet karakteristikave individuale të fëmijës dhe faktorëve familjarë e institucionalë në gatishmërinë për shkollë, duke ofruar implikime të rëndësishme për zhvillimin e politikave dhe praktikave në arsimin parashkollor.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the implementation of early childhood education methodologies and the level of children’s school readiness in preparatory classes, by comparatively analyzing differences between institutions applying diverse pedagogical approaches, with a focus on the Reggio Emilia approach.

Methodology: The study employed a quasi-experimental design with measurements at the beginning and at the end of the academic year, integrated within a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were used to analyze changes over time and differences between groups, while qualitative data provied a deeper understanding of the study variables. The sample included 535 children from 18 preparatory classes in public preschool institutions in Tirana, along with their parents (N = 535) and 36 teachers. Nine of the classes implemented the Reggio Emilia approach. Data were collected using instruments assessing children’s development, the quality of the learning environment, pedagogical practices, and parental involvement.

Results: The findings indicated a significant progress of children across all developmental domains from the beginning to the end of the preparatory year, with more pronounced effects in language development and cognition. Comparative analyses between children in Reggio and non-Reggio classes revealed significant differences between groups in socio-economic development and in the domain of approaches to learning. The quality of the learning environment, child-centered practices and parental involvement was found to be good and relatively comparable across groups, with advantages for Reggio classes in specific indicators. Demographic, pedagogical and institutional factors explained a substantial proportion of the variance in school readiness, with the strongest predictive role attributed to pedagogical practices.

Conclusions: The results suggest that the Reggio Emilia approach contributes to specific dimensions of development. The findings highlight the importance of the quality of contemporary pedagogical practices, the educational environment and parental involvement in preparing children for the transition to primary education. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the role of the interaction between individual child characteristics, institutional and family factors in shaping school readiness, offering important implications for the development of policies and practices in early childhood education.

Shkurtesë

Programi i Itinerareve Kulturore të Këshillit të Europës përfaqëson një fushë relativisht të re dhe premtuese të kërkimit shkencor në Shqipëri. Ky disertacion trajton si pikënisje vlerësimin e potencialeve territoriale të Republikës së Shqipërisë për integrimin dhe zbatimin e disa prej këtyre itinerareve. Qëllimi kryesor i studimit është të analizojë në mënyrë të strukturuar mundësitë reale të vendit për t’u përfshirë në rrjetin e Itinerareve Kulturore dhe për të zhvilluar mekanizma zbatimi në nivel kombëtar dhe lokal.

Për arritjen e këtij qëllimi është përdorur metodologjia e Sistemeve të Informacionit Gjeografik (GIS), e cila mundëson identifikimin, dokumentimin dhe analizën hapësinore të burimeve kulturore e natyrore, si dhe të faktorëve të aksesueshmërisë dhe infrastrukturës. Një objektiv thelbësor i studimit është ndërlidhja e itinerareve me asetet e trashëgimisë kulturore, duke ruajtur parimet e mbrojtjes mjedisore dhe të zhvillimit të qëndrueshëm. Nëpërmjet metodave të përdorura, është realizuar inventarizimi i itinerareve për të cilat Shqipëria shfaq potencial të verifikueshëm, si dhe është vlerësuar mundësia e integrimit të formave të tjera të turizmit, të përshtatura sipas karakteristikave të zonave të ndryshme të studimit.

Abstract

The Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes Programme represents a relatively new and promising field of scientific research in Albania. This dissertation takes as its starting point the assessment of the territorial potential of the Republic of Albania for the integration and implementation of selected Cultural Routes. The main aim of the study is to provide a structured analysis of the country’s real opportunities to join the Cultural Routes network and to develop implementation mechanisms at both national and local levels.

To achieve this aim, the research applies a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) methodology, enabling the identification, documentation, and spatial analysis of cultural and natural resources, as well as accessibility and infrastructure factors. A core objective is to link the routes with cultural heritage assets while maintaining the principles of environmental protection and sustainable development. Through the applied methods, the study compiles an inventory of routes for which Albania demonstrates verifiable potential and evaluates the feasibility of integrating other forms of tourism, tailored to the characteristics of the different study areas.

Abstrakti

Transformimet teknologjike dhe globalizimi kanë rritur ndjeshëm kompleksitetin e tregut të punës, duke e bërë identifikimin dhe analizën e aftësive të kërkuara nga punëkërkuesit një sfidë metodologjike dhe institucionale.

Ky disertacion fokusohet në përdorimin e algoritmeve të Modelimit të Temave (TM) për analizën automatike të shpalljeve të pozicioneve vakante të punës në Shqipëri, me theks të veçantë në aplikimin e algoritmit Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) për identifikimin e strukturave tematike dhe modeleve të aftësive joteknike.

Fillimisht, analizohen teorikisht algoritmet kryesore të modelimit tematik, përfshirë LSA, NMF, LDA dhe BERTopic, duke analizuar avantazhet dhe kufizimet e tyre në kushtet e të dhënave tekst në gjuhën shqipe. Në vijim, LDA analizohet me detaje nga këndvështrimi statistikor dhe zbatohet mbi një korpus shpalljesh pune për të nxjerrë tema koherente dhe aftësi dominuese të kërkuara nga tregu i punës shqiptar,

Kontributi praktik kryesor i disertacionit është zhvillimi i aplikacionit “Harta e Aftësive”, i ndërtuar në gjuhën R Shiny. Aplikacioni mundëson ngarkimin dhe përpunimin paraprak të përshkrimeve të pozicioneve vakante të punës, analizimin vetëm të seksioneve të kërkesave dhe përshkrimit të punës, identifikimin dhe kategorizimin e aftësive joteknike, duke aplikuar algoritmin LDA dhe përpunimin gjuhësor me UDPipe për gjuhën shqipe.

Abstract

Technological transformations and globalization have significantly increased the complexity of the labor market, turning the identification and analysis of necessary skills into both a methodological and institutional challenge.

This study examines the use of topic modeling algorithms for the automated analysis of job vacancy postings in Albania, with a particular focus on applying the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm to uncover thematic structures and patterns related to non-technical skills. The study first provides a theoretical analysis of the main Topic Modelling algorithms, including LSA, NMF, LDA, and BERTopic, examining their advantages and limitations when applied to a corpus with text data written in Albanian language. Further in the thesis, LDA is analyzed in detail from a statistical perspective and applied to a corpus of job advertisements to extract coherent topics and dominant skills demanded by the Albanian labor market.

The main practical contribution of the dissertation is the development of the “Harta e Aftësive” application, built using R Shiny. The application enables users to upload and preprocess job vacancy descriptions, analyze only the requirements and job description sections, identify and categorize non- technical skills, by applying the LDA algorithm and UDPipe for the Albanian language.

Abstrakti

Ky studim trajton klasën e mesme në Shqipëri, duke analizuar mënyrën se si ajo përcaktohet, matet dhe rolin që ka në stabilitetin ekonomik dhe shoqëror. Analiza tregon se kjo shtresë mbetet ende relativisht e nën-studiuar, dhe se mungesa e treguesve standard e bën klasifikimin e saj sfidues. Rezultatet tregojnë se, edhe pse ka përmirësime të kufizuara në shpërndarjen e të ardhurave dhe aksesin në shërbime, klasa e mesme vazhdon të jetë e brishtë, me shumë familje që përballen me pasiguri ekonomike dhe vështirësi në shpenzime bazike.

Faktorë si arsimi, stabiliteti në punë dhe pjesëmarrja e grave në tregun e punës rezultojnë të jenë vendimtarë për konsolidimin e saj. Studimi gjithashtu evidenton se politikat publike kanë një rol kyç: sistemi tatimor progresiv, mbështetja në arsimin formal dhe profesional, strehimi social dhe kujdesi ndaj fëmijëve mund të kontribuojnë drejtpërdrejt në forcimin e klasës së mesme dhe në përmirësimin e kushteve të jetesës.

Në përfundim, për të kuptuar plotësisht dinamikën e klasës së mesme dhe për të garantuar një zhvillim të qëndrueshëm, është e nevojshme një qasje që kombinon analizën mikroekonomike dhe makroekonomike, duke kapur si faktorët individualë ashtu edhe ata strukturorë që ndikojnë në stabilitetin ekonomik dhe social.

Abstract

This study examines the middle class in Albania, analyzing how it is defined, measured, and the role it plays in economic and social stability. The analysis reveals that this social stratum remains relatively under-researched, and the lack of standardized indicators makes its classification challenging. The findings show that, despite some limited improvements in income distribution and access to services, the middle class continues to be fragile, with many households facing economic insecurity and difficulties in meeting basic expenses.

Factors such as education, job stability, and women’s participation in the labor market emerge as crucial for its consolidation. The study also highlights the key role of public policies: a progressive tax system, support for formal and vocational education, social housing, and childcare can directly contribute to strengthening the middle class and improving living conditions.

In conclusion, fully understanding the dynamics of the middle class and ensuring sustainable development requires an approach that combines both microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, capturing the individual as well as structural factors that influence economic and social stability.

ABSTRAKT
Ky disertacion doktorature përqëndrohet në vlerësimin e mikroplastikës së pranishme në grykëderdhjet e
lumenjve shqiptarë që derdhen në Detin Adriatik dhe kontribuojnë në ndotjen mikroplastike në këtë mjedis
detar. Ky hulumtim përqëndrohet në optimizimin e metodës për zbulimin e mikroplastikës në ujë. Fillimisht
u krye vlerësimi i kushteve mjedisore të pellgut Ishëm-Erzen dhe lumenjve Shkumbin dhe Seman, pasi ato
ndikojnë në zbulimin e mikroplastikës në ujë. Ndotja plastike në zonat bregdetare është sot një nga temat që
ka marrë shumë vëmendje.
Zhvillimi i shkencës dhe teknologjisë, i lidhur me përpunimin e lëndëve të para, zhvillimin industrial,
bujqësinë intensive, rritjen galopante të konsumit si rezultat i rritjes së popullsisë në shkallë globale, ka sjellë
pasoja të mëdha në ndotjen mjedisore. Përdorimi në rritje i materialeve plastike në konsumin e përditshëm dhe
në degë të ndryshme të industrisë dhe bujqësisë, i shoqëruar me një angazhim minimal për riciklimin e
mbetjeve, po ndikon gjithnjë e më shumë në prishjen e ekuilibrit natyror. Përdorimi dhe menaxhimi i mbetjeve
plastike është bërë sot një nga problemet kryesore të pranisë së mikroplastikës në mjedis, veçanërisht në ujërat
bregdetare dhe lumenjtë që derdhen në to. Prania e plastikës dhe mikroplastikës, të llojeve dhe madhësive të
ndryshme, në mjedisin ujor duket se ka një ndikim të drejtpërdrejtë në ekzistencën e organizmave. Ndër shumë
probleme, rritja e morbiditetit në organizmat detarë, ndikimi i drejtpërdrejtë në rrjetat dhe zinxhirët ushqimorë
përmes bioakumulimit, si dhe ulja e produktivitetit të peshkimit, etj.
Nga ana tjetër, mikroplastikat grumbullojnë ndotës të tjerë në sistemet ujore duke u bërë bartës dhe
transportues të tyre në mjedis. Ky studim synon të japë rekomandime për përmirësimin e kësaj situate në
përgjithësi dhe në veçanti pranë qendrave turistike bregdetare që shpesh ndodhen pranë deltave të lumenjve
ose që preken drejtpërdrejt nga shkarkimet e tyre.

ABSTRACT

This doctoral dissertation focused on evaluating microplastics present in Albanian river estuaries that
flow into the Adriatic Sea and contribute to the microplastic pollution in this marine environment. This
research focuses on the optimization of the method for detecting microplastics in water. The assessment
of environmental conditions of Ishmi – Erzeni Basin, Shkumbin and Seman Rivers was performed, as
they affect the detection of microplastics in water. Plastic pollution in coastal areas is today one of the
topics that has received a lot of attention.
The development of science and technology, related to the processing of raw materials, industrial development,
intensive agriculture, the galloping growth of consumption as a result of population increase on a global scale,
has brought major consequences in environmental pollution. The increasing use of plastic materials in daily
consumption and in various branches of industry and agriculture, accompanied by a minimal commitment to
recycling waste, is increasingly affecting the disruption of the natural balance. The use and management of plastic
waste have become today one of the main problems of the presence of microplastics in the environment,
especially in coastal waters and the rivers that flow into them. The presence of plastic and microplastics, of
different types and sizes, in the aquatic environment seems to have a direct impact on the existence of organisms.
Among the many problems, the increase in morbidity in marine organisms, the direct impact on food webs and
chains through bioaccumulation, as well as the reduction of fishing productivity, etc.
On the other hand, microplastics accumulate other pollutants in aquatic systems by becoming carriers and
transporters of them in the environment. This study aims to provide recommendations on improving this situation
in general and in particular near coastal tourist centers that are often located near river deltas or that are directly
affected by their discharges.

Abstrakt

Ky punim fokusohet në optimizimin e logjistikës në kompanitë e hidrokarbureve në Shqipëri, duke u përqendruar në dy dimensione thelbësore të problemeve të logjistikës, në identifikimin e qëndrave të shpërndarjes dhe rrugëtimin e inventarit. Përmes p-medianë identifikohen qëndrat e shpërndarjes që optimizojnë kostot e transportit. Punimi shkon në një prespektivë të mëtejshme të optimizimit të kostove, në problemin e rrugëtimit të inventarit që optimizon kostot e transportit nga qëndrat e shpërndarjes drejt pikave të shitjes për klientët përfundimtar, duke u fokusuar në ndryshimin e qasjes së menaxhimit të inventarit nga RMI në VMI. Për realizimin e modelit p-medianë janë mbledhur të dhëna sasiore të kërkesës dhe distancave për dy nga kompanitë që operojnë në treg për një periudhë prej një viti, ndërsa për realizimin e modelit IRP janë mbledhur të dhëna sasiore për një periudhë një vjeçare, të kërkesës, firove, kapaciteteve magazinuese dhe flotës së mjeteve, gjëndjes në magazina për secilën ditë, sikurse dhe kostove të mbajtjes dhe transportit, për një kompani që operon në treg. Rezultatet e hulumtimit tregojnë se kostot e transportit optimizohen me hapjen e një qëndre të dytë shpërndarëse dhe modeli përzgjedh dy qëndrat më të mira në lidhje me shpërndarjen e hidrokarbureve. Njëkohësisht ndryshimi i qasjes nga RMI në VMI, dhe modeli i implementuar IRP, ul ndjeshëm kostot e rrugëtimit të inventarit për kompaninë. Në këtë model përpos kostove, optimizohet përdorimi i mjeteve dhe mbajtja e inventarit. Rezultatet tregojnë se ka ndryshime të rëndësishme në terma të kostove, bazuar në politikat e transportit nga një mjet apo vizitave nga më shumë se një mjet në një njësi shitjeje. Studimi ka implikime të rëndësishme në terma teorik dhe aplikativ, duke u fokusuar në sferat e vendimmarrjes së politikbërjes dhe të kompanive. Këto implikime janë diskutuar në kapitullin e fundit të këtij punimi së bashku me kufizimet që ai ka dhe hapësirat për kërkime të mëtejshme në këtë fushë.

Abstract

This study focuses on the optimization of logistics in hydrocarbon companies in Albania, concentrating on two essential dimensions of logistics problems: the identification of distribution centers and inventory routing. Using the p-median approach, distribution centers that optimize transportation costs are identified. The study further explores cost optimization in the Inventory Routing Problem (IRP), which minimizes transportation costs from the distribution centers to the sales points for end customers, focusing on the shift in inventory management approach from RMI (Retailer-Managed Inventory) to VMI (Vendor-Managed Inventory). For the implementation of the p-median model, quantitative data on demand and distances were collected for two companies operating in the market over a one-year period. For the IRP model, quantitative data were gathered over one year, including demand, routes, storage capacities, fleet information, daily inventory levels, as well as holding and transportation costs for a company operating in the market. The research results show that transportation costs are optimized by opening a second distribution center, and the model selects the two best centers for hydrocarbon distribution. Simultaneously, the shift from RMI to VMI, together with the implemented IRP model, significantly reduces inventory routing costs for the company. In this model, in addition to cost, vehicle utilization and inventory holding are also optimized. The results indicate significant differences in terms of costs based on transportation policies, whether a single vehicle or multiple vehicles visit a sales unit. The study has important theoretical and practical implications, focusing on decision-making for both policymakers and companies. These implications, along with the study’s limitations and avenues for future research, are discussed in the final chapter of this work.Field of study: Operation Management

Abstrakti

Ky disertacion trajton parashikimin e ekstremeve hidroklimatike përmes një kornize hibride që integron modele statistikore të serive kohore me metoda inteligjente (rrjete neurale), me synim rritjen e saktësisë dhe të aftësisë paralajmëruese për episode kritike. Studimi fokusohet në dy fenomene me rëndësi për kontekstin shqiptar: thatësirat përmes indeksit SPEI6 në zonën e Fierit dhe përmbytjet përmes reshjeve kumulative P3d në zonën e Shkodrës. Modelet individuale statistikore (SARIMAX) dhe neurale (ANN, LSTM) krahasohen me arkitektura hibride të ndërtuara sipas parimit “model bazë + korrigjues”, ku komponenti statistikor kap strukturën kryesore të sinjalit, ndërsa komponenti neural mëson pjesën jolineare përmes mësimit të mbetjeve. Vlerësimi realizohet në dy dimensione: parashikim regresiv i serisë dhe identifikim/klasifikim i ngjarjeve ekstreme, duke përdorur metrika të përshtatshme për klasat e pabalancuara dhe testim të bazuar në kohë për të ruajtur integritetin kronologjik. Rezultatet e analizës krahasuese tregojnë se modelet hibride janë më të balancuara dhe më efektive se modelet individuale sepse përmirësojnë njëkohësisht saktësinë e parashikimit regresiv dhe aftësinë paralajmëruese për identifikimin e ngjarjeve ekstreme. Brenda secilit fenomen, hibridet japin performancë më të plotë duke reduktuar gabimin mesatar dhe duke rritur cilësinë e sinjalizimit për evente të rralla ndërsa krahasimi ndër fenomene konfirmon se avantazhi i hibridizimit ruhet edhe kur ndryshon dinamika e procesit, duke e bërë qasjen hibride një strategji të qëndrueshme parashikimi për ekstreme hidroklimatike.

Abstract

This dissertation addresses the forecasting of hydroclimatic extremes through a hybrid framework that integrates statistical time-series models with intelligent methods (neural networks), aiming to improve both predictive accuracy and early-warning capability for critical episodes. The study focuses on two phenomena of high relevance in the Albanian context: droughts, represented by the SPEI6 index in the Fier region, and flood-related extremes, represented by cumulative 3-day precipitation (P3d) in the Shkodër region. Standalone statistical (SARIMAX) and neural models (ANN, LSTM) are benchmarked against hybrid architectures designed under a “base model + corrector” principle, where the statistical component captures the dominant structure of the signal, while the neural component learns the remaining nonlinear dynamics via residual learning. Evaluation is performed along two dimensions: continuous (regression) forecasting of the target series and identification/classification of extreme episodes, using metrics appropriate for imbalanced classes and time-based testing to preserve chronological integrity. Comparative results show that hybrid models are more balanced and more effective than standalone models because they simultaneously improve regression forecasting accuracy and early-warning performance for extreme-event identification. Within each phenomenon, hybrids deliver more comprehensive performance by reducing average error and strengthening the quality of signaling for rare events, while cross-phenomenon comparisons confirm that the hybrid advantage remains robust even when process dynamics change, supporting hybridization as a stable forecasting strategy for hydroclimatic extremes.

Abstrakti

Kërkesa turistike në Shqipëri ka njohur rritje të ndjeshme gjatë dekadës së fundit, duke e bërë parashikimin e saj një element thelbësor për planifikimin ekonomik, zhvillimin e politikave dhe menaxhimin e kapaciteteve në sektorin publik dhe privat. Kjo tezë trajton modelimin dhe parashikimin e flukseve mujore të turistëve jorezidentë për periudhën 2016–2024 duke integruar metoda tradicionale statistikore, metoda të IA bashkëkohore dhe struktura hibride. Fillimisht, analiza eksploruese nxori në pah trendin rritës afatgjatë dhe sezonalitetin e fortë veror, si dhe ndërprerjet strukturore të lidhura me krizën globale të viteve 2020–2021. Më pas u testuan modele si ARIMA, Theta, Holt–Winters, Regresioni Linear, SVR, XGBoost, ANN, Prophet etj., duke përdorur një ndarje të rreptë train–test 80/20. Rezultatet treguan se disa modele IA arrijnë saktësi të lartë në metrika. Metodat hibride, të cilat kombinojnë qëndrueshmërinë strukturore të modeleve statistikore me fleksibilitetin e komponentëve algoritmikë, ofruan parashikimet më të qëndrueshme për horizontin 60-mujor. Renditja shumëkriteriale me PROMETHEE II mundësoi një vlerësim të balancuar të performancës së modeleve. Teza jep kontribut metodologjik duke propozuar një kornizë të përgjithshme hibride për parashikimin afatmesëm dhe afatgjatë në turizëm, e cila mund të zbatohet edhe në kontekste të tjera rajonale.

Abstract

Tourism demand in Albania has experienced significant growth over the last decade, making its forecasting an essential element for economic planning, policy development, and capacity management in the public and private sectors. This thesis deals with the modeling and forecasting of monthly non-resident tourist flows for the period 2016–2024 by integrating traditional statistical methods, contemporary algorithmic approaches, and hybrid structures. Initially, exploratory analysis highlighted the long-term upward trend and strong summer seasonality, as well as structural disruptions related to the global crisis of 2020–2021. Models such as ARIMA, Theta, Holt–Winters, Linear Regression, SVR, XGBoost, ANN, Prophet, etc. were then tested, using a strict 80/20 train–test split. The results showed that some algorithmic models achieve high accuracy in the metrics. Hybrid methods, which combine the structural robustness of statistical models with the flexibility of algorithmic components, provided the most robust forecasts for the 60-month horizon. Multi-criteria ranking with PROMETHEE II enabled a balanced assessment of the models’ performance. The thesis makes a methodological contribution by proposing a general hybrid framework for medium- and long-term forecasting in tourism, which can also be applied in other regional contexts.

Abstrakti

Modelet deep learning kanë luajtur një rol gjithmonë e më të rëndësishëm në fushën e mjekësisë, duke mundësuar automatizimin e shumë proceseve që deri më sot janë kryer në mënyrë manuale nga mjekët. Ndër këto procese, klasifikimi i imazheve mjekësore paraqet rëndësi të veçantë, pasi ndihmon në kufizimin e subjektivitetit që shoqëron interpretimin manual të tyre. Megjithatë, integrimi i këtyre modeleve në kontekste reale mjekësore mbetet një sfidë e hapur. Shumica e studimeve ekzistuese e vlerësojnë performancën e modeleve në kushte eksperimentale të idealizuara, të cilat nuk pasqyrojnë kompleksitetin real të të dhënave mjekësore. Për më tepër, ato abstragojnë nga çështje të rëndësishme të lidhura me privatësinë e të dhënave, interpretueshmërinë e vendimeve të modelit, kostot e burimeve llogaritëse të nevojshme, si dhe impaktin mjedisor të proceseve të zbatuara.

Ky disertacion e trajton procesin e klasifikimit si një problem shumëdimensional, i cili shkon përtej optimizimit të thjeshtë të performancës së modelit. Qëllimi i tij është të konceptojë, ndërtojë dhe vlerësojë një pipeline të strukturuar për automatizimin e procesit të klasifikimit të imazheve mjekësore në kushte reale klinike, duke garantuar riprodhueshmëri, besueshmëri dhe zbatueshmëri praktike.

Pipeline-i i propozuar USafePCOS-XNet përfshin mbledhjen dhe strukturimin e të dhënave mjekësore, de- identifikimin e tyre në përputhje me standardet ligjore HIPAA dhe GDPR, si dhe trajnimin, vlerësimin dhe interpretimin e rezultateve të një modeli deep learning të mbështetur në rrjetin bazë EfficientNetB0. Konteksti i aplikimit është klasifikimi i sindromës së vezoreve policistike (PCOS) duke përdorur imazhe ekografike të mbledhura nga një klinikë private. Modeli vlerësohet përmes një protokolli rigoroz eksperimental, i cili përfshin ndarjen e të dhënave në nivel pacienti, 5-fold cross-validation, si dhe përdorimin e metrikave të përshtatshme për probleme me disbalancë ndërmjet klasave (PCOS dhe NON_PCOS).

Për të rritur besueshmërinë e rezultateve integrohet teknika Grad-CAM, e cila ka për qëllim interpretimin e vendimmarrjes së modelit. Paralelisht, vlerësohen aspekte të qëndrueshmërisë, si kohëzgjatja e procesit, energjia e konsumuar dhe gjurma e karbonit. Ky studim propozon një qasje metodologjike gjithëpërfshirëse për automatizimin e klasifikimit të imazheve mjekësore, e menduar për t’u zbatuar në praktikë në mënyrë të besueshme dhe të përgjegjshme.

Abstract

Deep learning models have had a major impact in the field of medicine, enabling the automation of many processes that have traditionally been performed manually by medical experts. Among these processes, medical image classification is of particular importance, as it contributes to reducing the subjectivity associated with their manual interpretation. However, the integration of such models into real-world clinical settings remains an open challenge. The majority of existing studies evaluate model performance under idealized experimental conditions, which fail to reflect the real-world complexity of medical data. Moreover, they often abstract away from critical issues related to data privacy, the interpretability of model decisions, the computational resources required, and the environmental impact of the applied procedures.

This dissertation considers the classification process as a multidimensional problem, rather than a task limited to optimizing model performance. Its main objective is to design, develop, and rigorously evaluate a structured pipeline for the automation of medical image classification under real clinical conditions, while ensuring reproducibility, reliability, and practical applicability.

The proposed USafePCOS-XNet pipeline consists of a sequence of well-defined phases, including the collection and structuring of medical data, their de-identification in compliance with HIPAA and GDPR legal standards, as well as the training and evaluation of a deep learning model based on the EfficientNetB0 backbone, followed by the interpretation of the model outputs. The application context is the classification of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) using ultrasound images collected from a private clinic. The model is evaluated through a rigorous experimental protocol that includes patient-level data splitting, 5-fold cross-validation, and the use of evaluation metrics appropriate for classification problems with imbalance between classes (PCOS and NON_PCOS).

To enhance the reliability of the results, the Grad-CAM technique is integrated with the aim of interpreting the model’s decision-making process. In parallel, sustainability aspects are evaluated, including process execution time, energy consumption, and the associated carbon footprint. This study proposes a comprehensive methodological approach for the automation of medical image classification, intended to be implemented in practice in a reliable and responsible manner.
