The Faculty of Law was founded in 1954, under the name "Higher Legal Institute". After the creation of the State University of Tirana, the Higher Institute of Law was included in this University, as one of the seven faculties, under the name "Faculty of Law".
In 1965, it was reorganized and renamed "Faculty of Political and Legal Sciences", where the branch of political science and that of justice were included. These branches prepared, respectively, specialists of the political profile for the central and local bodies of power and lawyers for the bodies of justice and state administration.
In 1967, the journalism department was opened at this Faculty, which prepared journalists for the press and Albanian Radio-Television. In 1991, the law department was separated from the philosophy department, which had replaced the political science department. Thus, two separate faculties were created, while the journalism department was transferred to the Faculty of History and Philology.
Currently the Faculty is called "Faculty of Law"Until the 70s, the duration of studies was four years, while later, it was reduced to three years of studies, followed by a year of teaching practice at the judicial bodies. In the 80s, the four-year study period was restored at this Faculty.
After the 90s, the Faculty of Law underwent numerous changes. The incorporation of new notions and practices of the rule of law necessarily dictated the reform of the Faculty in academic, scientific, educational and physical capacity aspects. Starting from 1991, the curricula and teaching programs were changed and designed according to Western models, and the Faculty was also reorganized and restructured in form and content according to the requirements of the time.
Currently, the Faculty operates on the basis of new teaching programs, in line with the programs of Western schools, based on the Bologna Declaration and adapted to the specific conditions of our country, offering study programs in all three cycles: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate.
The faculty collaborates with a number of institutions for student internships or employment. It also provides the necessary facilities for the preparation and training of students.
