The Faculty of Foreign Languages has its beginnings in 1947, the year the Department of Russian Language was founded. The Chair of the Russian Language has functioned within the framework of a 2-year Institute, which in 1951 was transformed into a Higher Pedagogical Institute. With the creation of the University of Tirana in 1957, the Chair of the Russian Language moved as a branch to the Faculty of History and Philology.

In 1960, the Department of English Language (formerly the Chair of English Language) was established. Initially, the curriculum was mainly aimed at preparing future teachers of the English language and the language of Albanian literature for secondary and eight-year schools. Five years later, in 1965, the French Language Department was established.

The Department of Italian Language was established in 1984 with the aim of preparing future teachers of the Italian language as well as to spread and recognize the Italian culture and worldview.

In September 1991, the Faculty of Foreign Languages was established. This faculty in its composition had the Chair of the Russian Language, the Chair of the English Language, the Chair of the French Language and the Chair of the Italian Language. In 1992, the Department of German Language was added to the faculty. In 1995, the Department of Slavic-Balkan Languages was created, which included the Russian Language Branch, the Turkish Language Branch (1996) and the Greek Language Branch (1998). In 2008, the department of Spanish Language was added to the faculty.
