Faculty of History and Philology - UNIVERSITY OF TIRANA

Faculty of History & Philology

The Faculty of History and Philology was established in 1951, as part of the Higher Pedagogical Institute, which was the first institution in Albania for the preparation of teachers with higher education for social and natural sciences. With the establishment of the State University of Tirana in 1957, the Faculty of History and Philology became one of its seven faculties. Initially, it consisted of the branches of history, language - literature, later the branch of journalism and the Russian language was added here. Since then, it has undergone numerous expansions and reorganizations. Thus, in the academic year 1960-1961, the branch of the English language was added, and in 1966, that of the French language.

In 1972, the branches of foreign languages were separated from this faculty, to form the Faculty of Foreign Languages, while two years later the two faculties were united into a single one, to be re-divided again in 1992. Next to this faculty, there is there was also the independent interdisciplinary department of psychology and pedagogy, which later became the basis of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

In the Faculty of History and Philology, the most famous Albanian personalities and scientists in the field of Albanian sciences have taught: such as E. Çabej, A. Buda, M. Domi, Sh. Demiraj, S. Luarasi, N. Bulka, V. Kokona, I . Kadare, Mr. Sako, Q, Haxhihasani, S. Prifti, A. Kostallari, J. Xoxa, etc. The professorship of this faculty has given a visible help to the establishment and functioning of the faculties of other Universities of Albania, including the University of Prishtina.

Starting from the 1969-1970 school year, next to the branches of Albanian language - literature and history, special profiles for other foreign languages were created from time to time, depending on the needs, such as for Latin, ancient Greek, Italian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Czech, Polish, Hungarian, German and Spanish.

Based on the needs of a more complete preparation of teachers and specialists, the structure and profile of the branches has been changing. Thus, in 1982, the division of the history-geography branch into two separate branches was achieved: History with elements of geography and Geography with elements of history. The positive results of this partial separation, the raising of the qualification level of professorships and, especially, the opportunities created after 1990, made it necessary to further deepen the specialization of these branches.

The postgraduate qualification started as early as 1981, when several one-year postgraduate courses were opened at this faculty: firstly, psychology and pedagogy, a year later the Albanian language course, in 1984 the history course, and in 1985 the literary criticism course and with 1987 postgraduate course in psychology and pedagogy, without severance from work. In 1991, these courses were closed, to be opened again in 1996, this time as a postgraduate school (initially by correspondence), ie. as the first level of a complete two-level system of postgraduate qualification, which was built according to the relevant departments: the Postgraduate School of the Department of Linguistics, the postgraduate school of the Department of Literature, the Postgraduate School of the Department of History, the postgraduate school of the Department of Geography.

The Faculty of History and Philology has been and is one of the important scientific institutions of HE in the country, with a wide range of activities, which includes the organization of scientific conferences and participation in national, regional and international scientific gatherings, the publication of monographs, scientific papers of textbooks for high, middle and 8-year (today 9-year) schools. At the same time, it remains the country's most important institution for the preparation and qualification of researchers.

According to the relevant profiles of Albanian sciences, the right to defend doctoral theses by local and foreign candidates is recognized here.

Even the content of the teaching process has undergone many changes, in accordance with the level of development of the Albanian society, its needs and the demands placed before the high school. Thus, in the beginning, all branches had as their main task the preparation of teachers for secondary school, although, in reality, the teachers graduated from this Faculty have also worked in the upper cycle of the 8-year school. In addition to this, these branches have provided the contingent for research-scientific institutions and for other cultural institutions of the country, such as ATSH, Radio and Television, the institutes of the Academy of Sciences and later the universities in the districts, the publishing houses, etc., for meet the requirements of these institutions for personnel.

These specializations and profiles have also been accompanied by a great deal of work for the design of new teaching plans, the programs of many subjects that have been added to these plans, as well as for the revision of the programs of existing subjects, in order to be reflected in them achievements of world science. On the other hand, for the very profile that this faculty has, after the 90s there was a general reorganization of the programs, which had been highly politicized. They were totally reformed both in form and content.

The Faculty of History and Philology has provided valuable assistance in preparing foreign students as translators, linguists, historians, researchers of Albanian literature, etc. The work done by the branch of Albanian language and literature was particularly great, with which 282 foreign students studied and graduated from 25 different countries of the world, mainly from non-socialist countries, from Asia, Africa and Latin America. Besides these, many students from different countries attended one-year language preparatory courses at the Albanian language department. This tradition continued until 1982, when, as a result of the policy of self-isolation followed by the government of the time, these courses were closed. Now many efforts are being made to revive this beautiful tradition. Thus, from 1991 onwards, foreign specialists and students have come to the Department of Linguistics, mainly in the framework of cultural conventions, some of whom, after completing the one-year preparatory course, are studying Albanian language and literature, or defending various theses and diplomas of Albanianology. Next to this department, Chinese docents, Romanian docents, Greek docents, Swiss docents etc. have completed post-graduate qualifications and others are expected to come.

From the school year 1994-1995, the summer courses of the Albanian language and culture, in which students from different countries of the world participate.

In 2012, the Department of Archeology and Cultural Heritage was established in this faculty.
