The Faculty of Social Sciences, part of the University of Tirana, dates back to 1992. It was the result of the developments that followed the democratic changes of the Albanian society in the early 90s, when the preparation of professionals in the field of social policies and services, sociology and psychology, specialties that were missing until then. The first step in this direction was the opening in 1992 of the Faculty of Social Sciences, thanks to a collaboration with the Grand Valley State University of Michigan, USA, with the "Social Work" branch.
A year later, the faculty was added with the branch of Philosophy-Sociology and then with other branches of social sciences. Over the years, the Faculty of Social Sciences grew, both in the quality of the staff and in the variety of specialists it graduates. Thus, in 1996 the branch of Psychology was opened and in 2000 the branch of Political Sciences was opened. In 2009, the separate departments of Sociology, Philosophy and Political Sciences were created. The faculty has 5 departments, as well as 3,290 students in all study cycles during the 2017-2018 academic year.
The Faculty of Social Sciences during its activity has the primary mission of fulfilling three basic obligations, which are:
- Realization of the teaching process in the auditorium according to the contemporary standards of the European area of higher education.
- Encouraging and carrying out scientific research in support of the development of social and humanitarian policies of the Albanian society.
- Encouraging critical and creative thinking in order to develop the spirit of democratic citizenship
The fulfillment of this mission is achieved through the achievement of the main goal of the Faculty of Social Sciences' activity, which is the preparation of new specialists in social fields with a professional standard, capable of being integrated into the European market of social and human services.
The achievement of this goal is realized in the Faculty of Social Sciences through the fulfillment of its primary objectives, which are:
- High standards in the teaching process
- The adoption of scientific research as part of the work of the academic staff
- Carrying out studies of national importance in social and human disciplines
- Participation in regional studies on the drafting of integrative social policies with the region
- Continuous qualification of academic staff through the opening of new study programs in all cycles of university education
- Providing opportunities for lifelong education of specialists in social fields
- The promotion of comparative and applied studies with an impact on the promotion of the country's economic developments
- Giving contributions to increase the democratic standards of the Albanian society
- Training with modern standards of students in the field of social sciences and humanities
- Increasing the participation of students of social fields in national and regional research programs
- The undertaking of theoretical and applied scientific works with a large number of students
- Increasing the weight of postgraduate scientific qualification
- The creation of a university public space that is characterized by free, serious debate and dedication to the public good.
For the realization of these objectives, the Faculty of Social Sciences has a long-term development strategy. The long-term strategy of the Faculty of Social Sciences, 2014-2020, focuses on the deepening of critical thinking and the consolidation and equivalence of study programs according to European requirements and standards. This is achieved through:
- Opening a number of new study programs in all education cycles in Albanian higher education;
- Continuous qualification of specialists in the social field;
- Consolidation of new professions in the field of social sciences;
- Developing subjects that cultivate the critical use of the intellect.
The faculty, based on the Bologna system, offers study programs in all three cycles: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate. It has a qualified staff at some of the best universities in the USA and Europe.
