Faculty of Natural Sciences - UNIVERSITY OF TIRANA

Faculty of Natural Sciences

The Faculty of Natural Sciences (FSHN) is the main unit of the University of Tirana since its creation in 1957. It was created on the legacy of the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Tirana, 4 years (1951-1957), which was the institution of first in Albania for the preparation of teachers with higher education, as well as on the organization of several chairs and sectors of the Institute of Sciences and the Polytechnic.

FSHN since its creation and until now is the main center in Albania for the preparation of senior specialists in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology and Informatics as well as one of the most important institutions in the country for the preparation of teachers for secondary schools.

FSHN started its activity with 6 departments: that of Mathematics, Physics, Biology, General Chemistry, which directed the studies for 4 degrees, Mathematics, Physics, Biology - Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry.

In the 1960s, 2 new profiles were added: Special Mathematics and Special Physics, 5-year courses that together with the Special Biology profile in 1984 became schools where the most prominent figures of science and education in the field of natural sciences were trained. .

FSHN has always been changing both structurally and in the content of teaching and scientific research, responding to the needs of the country's development.

All chairs expanded scientific research and grew professionally in contact with the development of science in the world. Many pedagogues of this Faculty have specialized abroad in well-known Universities, they have completed their doctorates in those universities both in the countries of Eastern Europe and in those of Western Europe. Keeping up with the times has led to the fact that in the following years FSHN offers various study programs by graduating specialists according to the needs of the country. Branches such as Pharmacy and Mercology were opened for the first time in this Faculty, which today are next to the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Economics, respectively. Also in the 80s, the Informatics branch was opened.

With the growth of FSHN, we also have the establishment of new structures near it, such as the Computational Mathematics Center 1971, the Institute of Nuclear Physics 1970, the Botanical Garden 1971, the Museum of Natural Sciences as well as 3 Teacher Qualification Centers, Mathematics, Physics and Biology - Chemistry.

Also, the expansion of the fields of scientific research led to the division of the mother chairs into new chairs with new fields of study. In 1984, there were 12 chairs at FSHN. Several scientific departments and many laboratories worked near them. Study periods are 4 and 5 years. Until 1984, more than 5000 specialists completed their studies at FSHN. In the 90s, FSHN is organized in 7 Departments: Department of Mathematics, Biology, Pharmacy, Physics, Informatics, General Chemistry, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, 8 scientific teaching units and 18 sections. In 2007, the Department of Biotechnology was created, and in 2014, the Department of Applied Mathematics was created.

FSHN awarded 10 university degrees: 2 in Mathematics (Teacher of Mathematics for secondary school and Mathematician), 2 in Physics (Teacher of Physics for secondary school and Physicist), 2 in Biology (Teacher of Biology for secondary school and Biologist, 3 in Chemistry (Industrial Chemist, Food Chemist, General Chemist) and 1 in Informatics. FSHN also organized and directed post-university studies both for Master's degrees in the relevant fields and for the degrees of Candidate of Science and then Doctor of Science.

With the signing of the Bologna Declaration by Albania and at FSHN, work began on the reorganization of studies in accordance with the Bologna process.

The organization of studies in cycles began and the first diplomas for the first cycle of studies (3 years) began to be awarded.

After the approval of the new Law on Higher Education, 2007 FSHN reorganized the study programs of the first cycle and opened study programs of the second and third cycle. It was also institutionally restructured with the arrival of the Institutes of the Academy of Sciences in the FSHN.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences promotes, coordinates and administers teaching activities and research activities in the field of natural sciences (Biology, Physics, Informatics, Chemistry, Mathematics) respecting the academic freedoms of the academic staff and their right to use material resources and financial of the Faculty

FSHN, in accordance with the objectives of the University of Tirana, aims at the higher education of local students and beyond, further studies and specializations, scientific research and supporting activities in the fields of natural sciences.

The mission of FSHN is to prepare qualified individuals in the fields of natural sciences and their teaching by creating, developing and transmitting knowledge through teaching and scientific research, cultivating freedom and diversity of ideas, for the construction and consolidation of democratic society.

Conveying to students up-to-date university-level knowledge in the fields of natural sciences, equipping them with knowledge that gives them the opportunity to continue in-depth studies in the disciplines of natural sciences, at home or abroad, or to go out in the labor market as qualified specialists.
