Representation and scientific contribution of the University of Tirana at CERN – CMS Experiment
The University of Tirana continues to strengthen its presence and contribution to international scientific research. On November 30 - December 07, 2025, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Klaudio Peqini, lecturer at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Tirana, carried out his third research and training experience at CERN, within the framework of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) Experiment, with a focus on the RPC (Resistive Plate Chambers) subsystem.
During this visit, funded by the University of Tirana, Prof. Peqini completed the second part of the training for certification as a CMS RPC system shifter in the central control room at P5 (Cessy, France), and continued his scientific work in the RPC group laboratories in Prévessin (B.904). The training also included the successful completion of the mandatory safety course. Self-Rescue Mask, necessary for access to the LHC experimental cavern.
One of the most important scientific results of this period was the development of a new algorithm for calculating the local efficiency of RPC cameras, the results of which show very good agreement with existing standard methods. This work paves the way for the launch of a new PhD and for the continuation of scientific publications in collaboration with the international RPC group.
Also, during this visit, the contribution of the CMS-Albania UT-UPT group was consolidated, which has already produced the first scientific publication within the framework of the collaboration with the CMS Experiment, marking an important achievement for the University of Tirana in the field of high energy physics.
