The University of Tirana, Faculty of Natural Sciences, hosted the 38th meeting of UNECE ICP Vegetation Task Force, a program that monitors the impact of air pollution on vegetation and contributes to the design of environmental protection policies.
• Main topics discussed:
– The impact of ozone on ecosystems and future scenarios
– Effects of nitrogen and heavy metals on vegetation
– Mosses as biomonitors for pollution in Europe
• Key findings:
– The lowest concentrations of heavy metals are found in the north and west of Europe, while the highest are in the southeast.
– Some metals show pollution from specific regional sources, while others have transboundary impact.
– Since the 1990s, pollution from metals such as lead (-82.6%) and cadmium (-62.7%) has undergone a significant decline.
Present at this seminar were: The Vice-Rector of the University of Tirana, Prof. Dr. Anila Paparisto, the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Eglantina Kalluci, other faculty members of the FSHN, such as Prof. Dr. Pranvera Lazo, Prof. Assoc. Dr. Ana Kapaj, Dr. Felicity Hayes (Head of ICP Vegetation), and the academic staff of the Faculty of Natural Sciences
Studies continue to support global efforts to reduce pollution and improve environmental policies.
