Abstract: OF THE DOCTORAL DISSERTATION “The History of University Sport, 1957–1990” This doctoral dissertation examines the history of university sport in Albania from the founding of the State University of Tirana in 1957 to the end of the socialist system in 1990. At first sight, the subject may appear narrow, since it deals with physical edu- cation, student sport, university clubs, sporting infrastructure, and student competitions. However, the study demonstrates that university sport was not a marginal or merely recreational field. It was a significant space where the socialist state, higher education, youth policy, physical culture, ideological formation, military preparation, public rep- resentation, and everyday student life intersected. The dissertation therefore treats uni- versity sport not simply as a chronology of games, championships, and results, but as a historical field through which one can understand how socialist Albania imagined and shaped the student body: educated, healthy, disciplined, collective-minded, physically trained, ready for work and defense, and capable of representing the university and the country. The main focus of the dissertation is the State University of Tirana, the Chair of Physical Education, the university sports club later known as “Studenti,” and the insti- tutional links that connected these structures with state organs, youth organizations, the national system of sport, and the broader framework of socialist education. The chron- ological limits of the study are meaningful. The year 1957 marks the establishment of the State University of Tirana, which created the institutional conditions for organizing physical education at the university level. The year 1990 marks the end of the socialist period and the beginning of a new historical phase in which the relationship between the state, sport, higher education, and student life changed profoundly. Within this pe- riod, the dissertation investigates how physical education was institutionalized, how sport became mass-based inside faculties, how representative structures were created, how sporting infrastructure developed, and how student sport became linked with ide- ological, pedagogical, and military requirements. The study is situated at the intersection of several fields of historical inquiry. It contributes to the history of Albanian higher education, the history of physical educa- tion and sport, the social history of student youth, the institutional history of the Uni- versity of Tirana, and the political history of socialist Albania. This interdisciplinary position is one of the dissertation’s strongest features. Instead of treating sport as a sep- arate sphere, the dissertation reads it as a place where knowledge, body, discipline, competition, state control, student identity, and public representation met. In doing so, it broadens the history of the university. The socialist university was not only a space of lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, exami
